Epinion helps Alkohol & Samfund to strengthen alcohol prevention among young people

Situation

Alkohol & Samfund works for a sustainable alcohol culture in Denmark and focuses, among other things, on strengthening prevention in the transition between primary and lower secondary school, continuation school and upper secondary education. Epinion has carried out a qualitative study in which we spoke with pupils and professionals at five educational institutions that work actively with alcohol prevention, to gather experience and identify what works in practice. The insights are intended to inspire other schools to strengthen their alcohol-preventive work.

Complication

Alcohol plays a significant role in young people’s social lives, and alcohol initiation often takes place as early as primary and lower secondary school age. Experience shows that an early and coordinated effort can delay initiation and reduce consumption, but prevention requires ownership and involvement. Many schools find it challenging to give pupils a sense of genuine participation, and it can also be difficult to ensure broad ownership among professionals. Without meaningful involvement, support declines and the effort is more likely to meet resistance from pupils and parents.

Recommendation

The study indicates that an early and systematic effort – preferably from Year 7 to Year 8 – as well as close collaboration between the school, parents and actors such as SSP can delay alcohol initiation and reduce consumption. Clear rules, consistent communication and a shared approach among staff also strengthen the impact of alcohol-preventive initiatives. The schools also highlight that genuine pupil involvement creates ownership, and attractive alcohol-free communities contribute to a safer and more inclusive youth environment. National guidelines and local networks can also support the effort and make implementation easier. Read the full study here.
