How can we make bicycle parking at the train station safer?

Situation

One of the factors that can make people choose the car over the train is that they find the transportation to and from the station a hassle, time-consuming and difficult to manage, because they do not want to cycle to the station for fear that their bicycle will be stolen. This can lead to the car being chosen as the mode of transport, even if they actually prefer the train journey itself over the car drive. Looking at the distance that needs to be covered to and from the station, the bicycle seems like an obvious choice to meet this transportation need.

Complication

A major barrier to using the bicycle to and from the station, however, is that there is an increasing risk of bicycles being stolen. DSB would like to help their passengers and potential passengers park safely at the station, so that they can leave the car at home and take the train instead. However, they lack knowledge about what it takes to provide an experience of safe bicycle parking at the station.

Recommendation

To gain a better understanding of what is needed to create more secure bicycle parking, Epinion conducted a qualitative study of bicycle parking at selected S-train and regional train stations with passengers who own a (self-reported) expensive bicycle. The study examined both travellers’ need for more secure bicycle parking and how two specific solutions from Bikeep and Bikely could help to create more secure bicycle parking.
